The Red Cross Quilt

I started with this wonderful embroidery and made it a focal point...I adored that teeny tiny cross too.
I planned something totally different when I first thought about this project, but it evolved into this and I'm pretty happy with it.
I had another bee make crosses for me as well, and of course they got all mixed up in the process. I'm working on making this two sided with another cross design on the back.
Thanks so much for all the unique crosses you made for me. Not done, but at least it's in progress.

Somehow I had trouble getting my seams to line up perfect for all the crosses for Jacquie...

but I made three and hope they are ok!

Here are three blocks for Jacquie's cross quilt--I hope they're what you're looking for! I loved the fabrics you sent! i also added a tiny strip of black to one of the blocks. I had the same problem Jess had with the seam allowances, but I think that's just par for the course. I can't wait to see how this quilt looks when it's all done!

Red crosses

This is the first time I've made cross blocks, even though they've been everywhere in blogland. I kept going until I ran out of white, so I ended up making three. They were pretty simple to make, but a little tricky for me because I am not the best at working with small pieces. Also, I normally press all seams open, but it didn't seem appropriate for these blocks. I ended up pressing them in whichever direction worked best, so the backs seem kind of a mess. But they lay flat... I guess that's all that matters. I had fun with this little project - Thanks Jacquie!

For Jacquie:
I hope it's simple and not too quilt-block-like for your son. Going simple is not as easy as it sounds. I showed my husband and he really liked, so at least I have one man's thumbs up on this.

For Lynn:
I recently got this book, Material Obsession, and was really inspired by it. This block pattern is from the quilt, Cowboy Baby. I took one set of the block and blew it up. There wasn't many big pieces of fabric in the bundle that I got, but I made it.It's 14 inches, so feel free to cut it down if you need it. I sent the rest of the fabric back, though I did keep 2 pieces because they were so pretty.

They both have been sent out, so hopefully both of you will receive it by the end of the week.

Ok, I won't foul this place up with my dirty mouth. And yes, you can all feel free to call me what ever you deem fit, you'll be right. I am the worst quilter bee ever and I sincerely apologize for my tardiness.
But! There is good news. As some of you hopefully know by now I knocked out a huge chunk of blocks recently, most of which were sent a couple of weeks ago. So, roll call:

modern, minimal, masculine in progress

Thought you all might want to see Jon's quilt in progress. The original plan changed (imagine that!) when the blocks started arriving. They were like individual paintings, so I framed each one and put them in rows like paintings in a gallery. You might notice that the blocks have changed a bit. The large blocks didn't work for the design, so I made them smaller...they are now 13" blocks. I tried hard to preserve the essence of your designs in the trimming.
I have 2 more blocks here that are not yet in the quilt. There will be one more row of 5 blocks added and then the bottom will be more blue linen. The beige is a natural linen. I love the peaceful feeling of the quilt.
Jon didn't want to be involved after the blocks arrived. He wants the finished product to be a surprise. I don't want to be a pain, but if you haven't sent your block, if you have some time, I'd sure appreciate receiving it in the next little while. Jon graduates in a little over a month and I don't want to be that lame mom who wraps an unfinished quilt. (kind of like I did for my mom at Christmas). I always fuss over quilting a quilt for at least a month, so that puts me pretty much at deadline.
Thanks to everyone who put so much effort into these fabulous blocks. I'm loving it so far and I think Jon will too.

block(s) for Jacquie (and Jon)

so I made my block for the next month of the quilt bee today. I opened the fabric when I got it, but didn't take a close look at it. today I laid them out, and I was really struck by the deer paint-by-number fabric, so I decided to showcase it in the block. I use the blue linen as lines between, to look a bit like a windowpane maybe.

I sewed this up yesterday - I already had Denyse Schmidt on my mind since I was sewing up this quilt and of course, Project Improv.

I hope this is what your son was envisioning Jacquie.....I was a little nervous about this block. I wanted to make sure I got it right.

I left it at 16" so you can cut it down when you get it (so it wouldn't fray too much).

Modern Dots

i finally got back into the sewing room today and a quilt block was the perfect-size project for me to tackle.

i love, love, love this dot fabric, so i decided that for me, "minimal" meant using only two different fabrics. and a minimal number of seams. you could also view the block in this orientation:

well, i suppose you could turn it in any of the four directions, but these were the only two i photographed. it's a bit of a stab in the dark, but i hope your son likes it, jacquie! thanks for giving me the chance to play with this print.
